Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen is officially named as the face of ‘Material girl’, the line which Madonna and her daughter Lourdes created for Macy’s..
The Material Girl apparel collection is inspired by the ’80 and will include clothing, shoes, accessories, and jewelry aimed at young women 13-25, and is set to retail between $12 and $40.
Taylor Momsen will promote flirty mini-dresses, cute accessories, skinny jeans, and studded leather jackets. The collection will be launched on the 3rd of August and sold exclusively at Macy’s department stores and on their site.
The second show on the openingsoiree of AIFW was Iris van Herpen. She showed a small preview of her s/s 2011 collection, which will be fully shown at London Fashion Week in September. Her ‘Crystallization‘ collection is based on the transformation of water into crystal where the designer has taken the process from liquid chaos to a hard structure as a starting point.

‘I’m fascinated by the fact that secret lines are hidden in fully transparent and fluid materials. At the moment this material freezes (when the crystal arises) this comes to life. It’s then that the symmetry and structure underneath become visible’, explains Iris van Herpen.
Van Herpen keeps on looking for contrasts between experiments and wearable items for her collections. That is also why her work is often compared to Alexander McQueen’s. Even Lady Gaga was also spotted in one of her creations.
I love this ‘splash’ of water that was made out of PetG, a mix of water and glass.
Even though I can’t say I’d wear her creations from this collection, I must say that they are true pieces of art. And I’m not the only one who thought so, the reactions of the audience were wild. I can’t wait to see the other pieces she has in store for us in September!

Ze gaf een kleine preview van haar lente/zomer 2011 collectie, die in zijn geheel zal getoond worden tijdens Londen Fashion Week in september. Haar ‘Crystallization’ collectie is gebaseerd op de transformatie van water in kristal waarbij de designer het proces van vloeibare chaos naar vaste structuur als uitgangspunt heeft genomen.
‘Ik ben gefascineerd door het feit dat er een geheim lijnenspel verborgen zit in een geheel transparant en vloeibaar materiaal. Dit komt tot leven op het moment van bevriezing, zodra er kristallen ontstaan. Dan pas wordt de onderliggende symmetrie en structuur zichtbaar’, aldus Iris van Herpen.
Van Herpen blijft in haar collecties contrasten opzoeken tussen experimenten en draagbare stukken. Daarom wordt haar werk ook vaak vergeleken met die van Alexander McQueen. Ook Lady Gaga werd al in haar creaties gespot.
Al zou ik geen stukken uit deze collectie dragen, moet ik toch wel zeggen dat het pure staaltjes kunst zijn. En ik was niet de enige met die mening, de reacties van het publiek na afloop van de show waren overweldigend. Ik kan alvast niet wachten om te zien wat Iris nog meer in petto heeft in september!
Yesterday, the 13th edition of Amsterdam International Fashion Week got kicked of by SIS, the new clothing line from the Spijkers & Spijkers sisters. Great debut for a new label I must say. I’m totally loving the floaty dresses and blue blazers!
‘SIS (short for sister) is totally different, but still has that recognizable Spijkers en Spijkers touch’, explains Truus Spijkers. It’s less pricy (from 85 to 350€) and is more widely accessible.
The collection was inspired by a Dutch folk song (‘Daar was laatst een meisje loos’), that’s why there are a lot of maritime references in bon ton style. The collection told the story of a girl looking for adventure and sailing along with a captain whom she fell deeply in love with.
This story was translated into garments with sea-inspired colors: blue, green, white and black (sleeveless) dresses, blazers, tees with ‘Bam Boozle’ on them, jackets, jumpsuits, high waist shorts, striped pants and maxi dresses in fabrics that are perfect for summer. The Spijkers sisters also put a lot of work (and thought) into the details: shells, parrots and folded sailboats were carefully placed on the collars of the garments.

Gisteren ging AIFW officieel van start met de show van SIS, de nieuwe kledinglijn van de Spijkers en Spijkers zusters. Geweldig debuut voor een nieuw label. Ik ben alvast helemaal weg van de luchtige jurkjes en blauwe blazers!
‘SIS (afgekort van zus) is helemaal anders, maar blijft die herkenbare Spijkers en Spijkers touch behouden’, aldus Truus Spijkers. Het is minder prijzig (85 tot 350€) en is toegankelijker.
De collectie is geïnspireerd op een Nederlands volkslied (‘Daar was laatst een meisje loos’), daarom zijn er veel maritieme referenties in bon ton stijl aanwezig. De collectie vertelde het verhaal van een meisje dat op zoek was naar avontuur en meezeilen met een kapitein op wie ze verliefd werd.
Dit verhaal werd vertaald in kledingstukken met op de zee geïnspireerde kleuren: blauw, zeegroen, wit en zwarte jurken, blazers, t-shirts met ‘Bam Boozle’ erop, jasjes, jumpsuits, hoge taille shorts, gestreepte broeken en maxi jurken in zomerse stoffen. De Spijkers zuster besteedden ook veel tijd aan de details: schelpen, papegaaien en opgevouwen zeilbootjes werden zorgvuldig op de kragen aangebracht.

The collection is divided into 5 trends: Android pythonprints, paillettes, buckles, colors silver and black, fingerless gloves. Heritage wedges with rubber soles, knitted scarves, leather booties. Woodstock Items inspired by festivals, folk prints, fringes, studs, Chanel lookalike clogs. Ryder horse riding boots, capes, shades of moss green, coarse fabrics, leather bags and backpacks. Wonderland knitted bags, powdered colors, butterflies, mens shoes. Baroque velvet, stiletto’s, kralen, black shades, baroque prints.
On Monday, Dutch designer Ilja Visser showed her new Ready To Fish_ collection for s/s 2011 called ‘Opposites attract’. And the show really was all about contrasts; from really feminine clothes to some androgynous looks and from prints to nudes to dark colors. The collection has elegant silk tops and dresses combined with tight cut pants and assymmetrical jackets. I love how the trendy clothes were made out of carefully picked fabrics that made them look very comfortable.

It’s time for a fashion update on one of my favorite tv-shows at the moment, Gossip Girl! Currently the cast is in Paris shooting season 4. Model Lou Doillon is said to make an appearance on the show this fall and the one and only Karl Lagerfeld (!) is rumored to star as well! We’ll just have to wait and see..
