The second show on the openingsoiree of AIFW was Iris van Herpen. She showed a small preview of her s/s 2011 collection, which will be fully shown at London Fashion Week in September. Her ‘Crystallization‘ collection is based on the transformation of water into crystal where the designer has taken the process from liquid chaos to a hard structure as a starting point.

‘I’m fascinated by the fact that secret lines are hidden in fully transparent and fluid materials. At the moment this material freezes (when the crystal arises) this comes to life. It’s then that the symmetry and structure underneath become visible’, explains Iris van Herpen.
Van Herpen keeps on looking for contrasts between experiments and wearable items for her collections. That is also why her work is often compared to Alexander McQueen’s. Even Lady Gaga was also spotted in one of her creations.
I love this ‘splash’ of water that was made out of PetG, a mix of water and glass.
Even though I can’t say I’d wear her creations from this collection, I must say that they are true pieces of art. And I’m not the only one who thought so, the reactions of the audience were wild. I can’t wait to see the other pieces she has in store for us in September!

De 2de show op de openingsoiree van AIFW was die van Iris van Herpen. Ze gaf een kleine preview van haar lente/zomer 2011 collectie, die in zijn geheel zal getoond worden tijdens Londen Fashion Week in september. Haar ‘Crystallization’ collectie is gebaseerd op de transformatie van water in kristal waarbij de designer het proces van vloeibare chaos naar vaste structuur als uitgangspunt heeft genomen.
‘Ik ben gefascineerd door het feit dat er een geheim lijnenspel verborgen zit in een geheel transparant en vloeibaar materiaal. Dit komt tot leven op het moment van bevriezing, zodra er kristallen ontstaan. Dan pas wordt de onderliggende symmetrie en structuur zichtbaar’, aldus Iris van Herpen.
Van Herpen blijft in haar collecties contrasten opzoeken tussen experimenten en draagbare stukken. Daarom wordt haar werk ook vaak vergeleken met die van Alexander McQueen. Ook Lady Gaga werd al in haar creaties gespot.
Al zou ik geen stukken uit deze collectie dragen, moet ik toch wel zeggen dat het pure staaltjes kunst zijn. En ik was niet de enige met die mening, de reacties van het publiek na afloop van de show waren overweldigend. Ik kan alvast niet wachten om te zien wat Iris nog meer in petto heeft in september!
