NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams: Antwerp vs Tokyo

Today’s post features 2 of my favourite cities in the world: Antwerp & Tokyo! NYX couldn’t have picked better names for their Soft Matte Lip Creams if you ask me, but how do these perform? Let’s find out!

I hauled a bunch of NYX products when I was in the States last year and they do some great stuff. L’Oréal recently bought the brand so I’m curious to see if they will bring it to new markets (Belgium, hellooo). I’ve been hooked on the Butter Lip glosses which have appeared on this blog over and over. Yet I still owe you a full report incl swatches (coming up, pinky promise). Today I’d like to put the spotlight on the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams. I’m always rather hesitant towards matte lip products as they usually tend to be really drying. And as a person with dry lips, it’s only logical you try to avoid it. Yet matte lips do look really pretty and these colours were calling my name, so I gave them a go.

Tokyo‘ is what drew me to these in the first place. It’s a lovely bright pink shade with blue undertones. It reminds me of the bright colours in the MAC Viva Glam x Lady Gaga collection. It’s a very bold yet very fun colour to wear during spring and summer. This colour in particular was a bit difficult to get right during application. Not because it’s not pigmented, because it really is, but the formula is making it difficult to spread the colour around easily. Out of the 2 colours, I also found this one accentuates cracks & dryness the most.

Antwerp‘ on the other hand is a very bright red with pink undertones and a hint of orange. It’s a lot darker than ‘Tokyo’, which is probably the reason the colour looks more even and therefore better on the lips. The dryness doesn’t show up as much. From afar they look equally great, it’s only when you come closer the difference between the 2 becomes noticeable.

Overall, I like how they feel on the lips. It’s nothing like what I’ve used before. The creams feel smooth and velvety, giving the lips a comfortable feeling. They’re also pretty long-lasting, although I advise to reapply every time you eat or drink. Not just to maintain the intense colour, but it also helps to stay soft and to keep them from drying out.

These matte lip creams won’t be for everyone, especially when you can’t be bothered with reapplying (although that’s about the same for every intense colour you wear), but I think these are a good option if you’re looking for something matte. If you’re afraid of dry lips you can always add a bit of lip balm on top, which I usually do on the bad days.

As far as the end game goes I’d say Antwerp is the winner here. Even though I fell hard for the colour of Tokyo, I think Antwerp applies better and looks better on me in general.

Good to hear they’re so comfortable to wear! And I personally don’t mind reapplying.
