Holika Holika x Gudetama Limited Edition

I’m back with another kbeauty post starring popular roadshop brand Holika Holika who recently launched a collection featuring the uber-cute Gudetama! – Gudewhat? If you’re not familiar with this Japanese lazy egg character from Sanrio, go check out this great post. The collection is pretty massive and contains make-up, skin care and hair care products. Today I’ll be reviewing some of the makeup products that I bought before moving onto skin care (the mask sheet) in a different post because this was getting too long. Someone was getting way too egg-cited while taking pictures!

Holika Holika Lazy & Easy Face 2 Change Photo Ready BB Cushion SPF50 PA+++

First up is the main reason I got sucked into getting all of this stuff: the Lazy & Easy Face 2 Change Photo Ready BB Cushion. What a mouthful. This cushion wasn’t exactly on the top of my list to try right away, but hey cute packaging changes everything. There are 3 Gudetama cases to choose from and after much deliberation, I went for the “Put Ribbon On” case. The otherwise black case is now dressed in a flashy yellow-orange colour with white top that says “lazy & easy” right above the lock. Considering how effortless cushion foundations are, I’d say this is a match made in heaven for the lazy girl!

Another cool feature is that you get an extra refill and Gudetama sponge applicator in a sealed bag with the cushion, which is something I’ve been missing with Western cushion launches. The fact that you actually can use a refill is a definite plus for me (I’m looking at you, L’Oréal!). Who would want to through something so cute away after it runs out? Something I hadn’t seen before is that the moment you push the lock to open the compact, the airlock opens as well. You might want to think twice before taking a peek if you’re not planning to use it right away, just saying.

Once you open the top it immediately becomes clear why Gudetama was made for this collab. The puff featuring Gudetama’s face lying in the compact looks just like an actual egg. It’s so simple yet so brilliant at the same time. Kudos to the packaging design team! It’s not ruby cell material though, which means more product will get sucked into the sponge than you bargained for.

Underneath the ‘hood’, you’ll also find a good mirror (I forgot to remove the protective film for the photo) in a decent size and the compact isn’t particularly bulky or heavy. Both features make reapplying on the go a piece of cake and I’ve been dragging this compact with me wherever I go for that reason.

Okay enough chit-chat about the packaging. Let’s get down to the actual foundation. A major plus in my book is the SPF factor of 50 and PA+++, which helps to protect the skin from both UVA & UVB rays. Since cushions are made to reapply, this enables you to prolong your SPF protection throughout the day without having to start your routine all over again. For those who are wondering, yes this fragrance has a scent to it. I personally don’t mind, in fact, it’s not quite bad, but it’s something to take into account when you’re sensitive to fragrances.

There are only 2 colours to choose from, #21 and #23, which is typical for most Korean brands. If you’re darker than a MAC NC30 – NC35, this won’t be for you as the colours are catered towards fairer skin types. I got the lightest colour, #21 Light Beige cushion, which is probably the grayest cushion foundation I’ve seen. It does adjust to the colour of my skin after application, but I do think the cool skin types are more likely to get away with it. It’s quite brightening on the skin and has light coverage that is buildable to medium coverage. Redness gets covered pretty easily, only those pesky pimples are still slightly visible, so using a concealer is something I tend to do when I use this cushion. (Scroll down for pictures of how the cushion looks on).

The finish is the dewiest one I’ve tried to date. As you may now, a glowy, dewy skin is the go-to look in Korea and I can totally relate, only I even found there was a little too much glow going on for my combination skin. Nothing that can’t be easily fixed with some powder though. Even with powder, I’m left with natural looking skin with a nice glow. Because the coverage is so light, it does show up a little bumpy in areas where my skin is uneven. Some pore-filling primer underneath takes care of that.

Despite the moisturizing abilities and glowy finish, the Face 2 Change Photo Ready BB cushion was pretty long-lasting. Besides some oily residue that can easily be removed using some blotting paper and some product moving around the nose, everything was still put by the end of the day. In the end the cushion is a little too dewy for me for every day use, but it’s one I will definitely pop out again when it’s winter and my skin is drier than usual.

Holika Holika Lazy & Easy Jelly Dough Blusher

Next up is the Jelly Dough Blusher which comes in 2 shades, 01 Grapefruit and 02 Plum Pink. I only let myself pick one and went for 01 Grapefruit, a coral shade with pink tones for once. It’s just as adorable as the cushion foundation. Just look at his blushing cheeks and not to mention the bacon sticker!

The pact is about a quarter smaller than the cushion foundation and also comes with a mirror (who constantly fell out unfortunately) and a puff which had a layer on top, protecting the product from being absorbed. It’s just big enough for my 2 fingers to fit. The blush is covered by a plastic layer with Gudetama’s ass showing from underneath bacon. Apparently the text reads “Shut it… I want to be alone” in Korean. I just died.

Despite the fact that you apply it in the same way as you would with a cushion foundation, the blush isn’t separately sealed with an airlock. The reason for that is that this is a jelly blusher, not a cushion blusher. Jelly blushers are those putty cream-type blushers where you can stick your finger in and it will stay that way. Kinda like play-doh I guess. The most famous Western counterpart is probably the Dream Bouncy blushers from Maybelline, which were so popular a couple of years ago.

I’m so happy with 01 Grapefruit! It’s such an amazing coral-peachy-pink colour. The cream-to-powder formula has good pigmentation but shows up really naturally once blended into the skin. I always use the sponge puff because it takes up the right amount of product and it has the perfect size for my cheeks. Just like the puff from the cushion, this one’s also easy to wash with some brush cleansing soap. Too bad for the defect mirror (still looking to see how I can fix it properly), but I’m super stoked about this product and would recommend you give this a go.

Holika Holika Lazy & Easy Melting Lip Button

Last but not least is a product I wasn’t really interested in at first because I have way to many lip products already. After seeing some swatches, I quickly changed my mind. RD01 and OR02 are the two available colours of the Lazy & Easy Melting Lip Button. They come in yellow click pens with Gudetama sitting on top. Not my favourite packaging in terms of looks, but click pens are quite handy so I’ll take it.

I picked up RD01 Berry Marmelade because it seemed like such a fun and bright colour for summer and I haven’t got anything like it. This seemed like a really cool shade to do a Korean gradient lip with and that is mostly how I wear this product. The lip pen feels really buttery and smooth and looks really glossy. Those 3 things couldn’t prepare me for the amazement I experienced once I saw how pigmented it really was. Holy crap!

stylelab-kbeauty-blog-holika-holika-gudetama-melting-lip-button-berry-marmelade-swatches

With just one swipe you have a fully opaque lip, so for my gradient lip I tend to softly dot the lip pen along my lips, pat them together and then swipe along the inner corners. For the bold lip I would recommend using a lip liner beforehand though to get that crisp line. Otherwise you get the result shown here on the right. The glossy look fades after a while but the lip pens kind of grab onto the lips like a tint. Not so much but still leaving a wash of colour that will last throughout the day. If Holika Holika has any more colours of these, I’mma need’em.

The verdict: If matte is your ride or die, this is not the collection for you. If you love some glow and a pop of colour, then there’s surely something in here you will like. For me this collab is definitely a succes! Stay tuned for my mask sheet review!
