What’s on? The Walking Dead

Because there’s so much more to life than fashion & beauty, I thought it’d be fun to share some of my favorite series with you over the next couple of weeks. First up is the new drama/thriller/horror series ‘The Walking Dead’.

Drama – Horror – Thriller / Seasons (so far): 2 / Status: currently on tv

“Based on one of the most successful and popular comic books of all time, written by Robert Kirkman, AMC’sThe Walking Dead captures the ongoing human drama following a zombie apocalypse. The series follows a group of survivors, led by police officer Rick Grimes, who are traveling in search of a safe and secure home. However, instead of the zombies, it is the living who remain that truly become the walking dead. ”

Zombies… probably my worst nightmare. In some movies they are portrayed as slow and stupid, which makes you almost feel sorry for them. Hello, Shaun of the dead? In others, they are portrayed as vicious creatures who used to be your family or friends that now can’t wait to tear out your guts and nibble the flesh off your bones. ‘The Walking Dead’ covers the second kind, which they call ‘the walkers’. And how! These basterds sure are fast, and their make-up looks so incredibly realistic for a series, it freaked me out! More than once I catched myself covering my nose while watching a scene where one got torn apart.

The fact that this is a series also gives more room for character development, something I really miss during zombie movies, where all you see is a short introduction of the characters followed by zombie slashing until the end. The story follows the different characters around (using flash backs) throughout the series until the point where they meet and form a group. This is kind of reminds me of the way ‘Lost’ or ‘Crash’ was filmed.

‘The Walking Dead’ is all about a group of strangers who are struggling to survive in an apocalyptic world where death lurks around every corner. Besides the scare factor, TWD is all about decisions and trying to make the right ones, not only for Rick Grimes (protagonist) himself, but for the entire group who trusts his every judgement. That is, until people are starting to die.. The question is; what would you do to prevent your loved ones from getting harmed, when you have trouble staying alive yourself?
