Redken Diamond Oil

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but does that apply for your hair too? I put Redken’s Diamond Oil range to the test to find out. The range contains 8 products, divided into 2 sub-ranges; the ‘original’ Diamond Oil range and the High Shine range. The products you see here are a mix of both.

I started my new routine off with the Diamond Oil High Shine Shampoo (300 ml), a shampoo made for those who have dull & thin hair. I can imagine its yellow golden colour and sparkly shimmer calls out to all magpies and the best part is that it doesn’t leave any of the shimmers behind, which will save you having to scrub your hands and tub/shower like a maniac afterwards.

Then, I continue with the Diamond Oil High Shine Gel Conditioner (250 ml). First of all, I love the fact that there’s 100 ml less product in here. You use far less conditioner than shampoo anyway and finishing my shampoo first is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to hair care products. It’s silly, I know. The gel-type conditioner contains slightly smaller shimmer  that again washes out pretty quickly. At this point I wonder what’s the use of putting shimmer into products you need to wash off? It all looks rather gimmicky to me. I gave the conditioner the benefit of the doubt, but after trying it a few times I knew this wasn’t doing anything for me. Instead, it made my hair feel drier and crunchier than it was before.

Here comes the hero of the day: the Diamond Oil Deep Facets hair mask (250 ml). This baby comes from the regular Diamond Oil range which is catered to thick hair, and after trying this out a couple of times, I wonder if the original range is better. The Deep Facets mask quickly gets rid of the dry crunchy feeling from the High Shine Shampoo & Conditioner. I normally would only use a hair mask every 2 or 3 washes, but I ended up using it every time I used the High Shine products. I simply had no other option. Although I don’t think it’s better than other hair masks from Redken I’ve tried, it still saved my hair, which is why I granted it a spot in my top 2014 products.

After washing & conditioning the hair, it’s time to add some of the product that started it all; the Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine hair oil. This comes in a regular version (gold bottle) for normal to thin dry hair, and an intense version (black bottle) for thick damaged hair. According to Redken, this is the first silicone-free hair oil on the market. The ways you can use this product is seemingly endless: as a pre-shampoo, as a night treatment, together with your conditioner or hair mask, before using dryers or styling products, on dry hair, as a cut lotion, before dyeing or on the skin or scalp. I mostly apply 2-3 drops on towel-dry hair after I get out of the tub/shower. It helps making my hair feel smoother & easier to handle when brushing or styling it afterwards, yet I feel my beloved LP Mythic Oil still does a better job in nourishing the ends.

Lastly there’s the Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Spray (150 ml), which is the star product of the High Shine range, and it really is. Going to an event and in need of some extra shine? Look no further. This ultra-light oil that comes in a fine shimmery aerosol mist is what you need. You use this on towel-dry or dry hair as the finishing touch of your hair care routine.

If you’re a person who loves a divine fragrance lingering in your locks after washing them, you won’t find it with this range. Of course fragrance is a personal thing, but still it’s the first time I’ve encountered a fragrance I didn’t like in a hair care range. Redken has a ton of ranges and there are a lot of products I absolutely love, but the Diamond Oil range just doesn’t cut it for me. The 2 products that stand out the most are the Deep Facets hair mask and the High Shine Airy Spray.

Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Shampoo (300ml) € 23,20
Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Conditioner (250 ml) € 25,30
Redken Diamond Oil High Shine Airy Mist (150 ml) € 28,80
Redken Diamond Oil Deep Facets Mask (250 ml) € 36
Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine Intense (100 ml) € 40

Redken is available at the Redken professional hair salon.

I’ve never had bleached hair, but I don’t think this would be moisturizing enough. I’d recommend the LP Mythic Oil or Moroccan Oil over the Diamond Oil. I also loved the LP Pro-Keratin range to get rid of split ends.
