Fashion | A 101 with Levi’s 501

Jeans. I have at least 20 pairs of them hanging in my closet in all cuts, colours and sizes.  And I’m sure I’m not the only one. Within the USA alone, over 400 million pairs are sold each year! And guess which brand unleashed the blue denim madness onto the world? Yep.

With the current number of jeans labels it seems almost unreal that Levi’s is still top of the charts, especially when you consider some of their models have been with us from the very beginning. The iconic #501 for instance is celebrating its 140th anniversary this year and there’s no way Levi’s would let it go by unnoticed. Once a pant worn by American cowboys and factory workers is now sported by men and women all over the world, with each giving it a personal twist. And that’s the beauty of jeans; you can wear it however you want.

Levi’s is calling all #501 jean owners to show them your interpretation of their iconic jean. You can share your look on their website and the best pics get published in their special edition Levi’s #501 140th anniversary book. I’ll show you my interpretation in an outfitpost soon (as soon as the weather lets me), but I can already show you some pics of how I had mine customized in the Levi’s store (Kammenstraat 39, Antwerp).

I’ve always wanted to customize my jeans, but I could never find the right materials. When I saw the plastic tray filled with studs, I knew it was meant to be. I went for an ultra baggy boyfriend look with studs and spikes on the front pockets. I would’ve added some more, but since it’s such a time-consuming process I might add some more later myself.

Jeans, ik heb er zeker zo’n 20 paar in mijn kast hangen. En ik ben vast niet de enige. Alleen al in de USA gaan er jaarlijks meer dan 400 miljoen exemplaren over de toonbank. Het is ondertussen wel al een tijdje geleden dat Levi Strauss dit blauwe wonder op de wereld losliet, maar het merk staat ondanks de grote concurrentie nog altijd stevig in zijn schoenen. Wat het merk nog unieker maakt, is het feit dat sommige modellen zoals de iconische #501 die toen door voornamelijk Amerikaanse cowboys en fabrieksarbeiders gedragen werden nu nog steeds door mannen en vrouwen over de hele wereld worden gedragen.

De #501 mag dit jaar 140 kaarsjes uitblazen en doet dat in stijl. Voor het eerst wordt het ook in niet-denim versie uitgebracht en de eigenaars van de #501 opgeroepen om hun interpretatie van deze bijzondere jeansbroek met de wereld te delen. Je kan hiervoor terecht op de website en de beste foto’s krijgen een plaatsje in de speciale verjaardagsboek.

Ik trok alvast naar de Levi’s winkel in de Kammenstraat in Antwerpen om mijn jeans te customizen, iets wat al een tijdje op mijn to-do lijst stond. Enfin, ik wou het zelf doen maar de geschikte materialen vinden bleek geen sinecure te zijn. Ik ging voor een loszittend exemplaar (lees: 2 maten te groot) en liet enkele studs en spikes vlakbij de rand van de zakken plaatsen. Zodra het weer het toelaat, laat ik zeker nog zien wat mijn persoonlijke interpretatie is van deze jeans in een outfitpost. Wat vinden jullie van het resultaat? Zelf ooit al een jeans gecustomized?
