World, meet my guilty pleasure: Asian dramas. Though my love for US series is deep, sometimes I just like to see what the other side of the world has to offer. One of my latest faves is the Korean drama Oh My Ghost! Even though the drama was just released over the summer, I still feel a bit late to the party since I neglected it for so long. The cover didn’t really appeal to me as much, but eventually the countless positive reviews reeled me in.
Plot:
Na Bong-Sun is a food blogger who works as an assistant-chef at Sun restaurant. She works for Kang Sun-Woo, who is a star chef and her secret crush. Because of her extremely timid personality and low self-esteem, she doesn’t have any close friends. She occasionally sees ghosts thanks to her shaman grandmother. One day, Bong-Sun gets possessed by a lustful virgin ghost named Shin Soon-Ae. To make up for the lack of romance in her short life and believing that only by losing her virginity will she be able to “resolve her grudge” and move on to the afterlife, Soon-Ae is determined to seduce as many men as she can by possessing various women, and she finds the perfect vessel in Bong-Sun. When Bong-sun seemingly gets rid of her shyness and suddenly changes into a confident, dynamic woman, Sun-Woo begins to notice her. Meanwhile, the mystery surrounding Soon-Ae’s death rises and when it becomes clear it might have something to do with the accident of Sun-Woo’s sister.

If this is your first Asian drama, don’t let the language barrier scare you off. You can watch all episodes with English subtitles at Gooddrama. The reason I chose to blog about it today is because I feel both the story and characters are great and I could easily see this made into a more Western one if the casting is done right. (Don’t even get me started on the American version of Boys over Flowers! Don’t even bother watching that abomination).
Oh My Ghost is a typical Korean romcom with lovable characters. Park Bo-Young does an incredible job at portraying both the timid Bong-Sun and bright Soon-Ae, the kitchen squad is high-larious and the main characters share a lot of chemistry. I haven’t even talked about the sinister part of the story, which to me was pretty unexpected. The story grabbed me immediately and navigated me through all of these emotions as the plot thickened. There were characters I would’ve loved to see more of (Seo Joon fan!), but overall this drama was really enjoyable and I’m kind of sad it ended. So if you’re looking for something to watch and are in the market for something completely new, have a go at a Kdrama. If you love rom coms with a hint of sci-fi and suspense, my guess is you’ll love this.
