If you’re an avid YouTube watcher like me, chances are you’ve heard of Boscia (pronounced bo-sha, short for ‘botanical science’). Two years ago every beauty youtube was talking about the 100% preservative-free brand and how amazing their products were. The originally Japanese but US based brand is part of the Fancl corporation (one of the biggest cosmetics producers in Japan) who introduced the brand to the U.S. back in 2002. The Fancl Mild Cleansing Oil has been one of the top-selling cleansing products in Japan for years now, which made me curious about its counterpart from Boscia; the Boscia MakeUp-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil.

This gentle and effective cleansing oil is meant to be used as the first step in the Japanese cleansing ritual to remove makeup & buildup before moving on to a second (often gel or water based) cleanser. It has a very faint smell of geraniums and has a slight green tint to it.

It contains:

-Natural Oil Complex (Rose Hip, Green Tea, Avocado, and Olive Fruit Oils): Delivers rich antioxidant vitamin E (tocotrienols) and utilizes a unique nanotechnology to detoxify and nourish the skin, refine the appearance of pores, and protect against free radical damage.
-Botanical Amino Acids: Removes impurities and excess oil gently, while leaving skin conditioned and maintaining its protective moisture barrier.
-Hydrangea Leaf: Purifies and minimizes the appearance of pores.
-Eucalyptus: Stimulates the skin’s natural circulation for an invigorated look and feel.

Ingredients: Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, PEG-20 Glyceryl Triisostearate, Polyglyceryl-10 Diisostearate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Glyceryl Behenate/Eicosadioate, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Water, Butylene Glycol, Isostearic Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Coccinia Indica Fruit Extract, Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract, Rosa Canina Seed Extract, Camellia Oleifera Leaf Extract, Solanum Melongena (Eggplant) Fruit Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Flower Extract, Corallina Officinalis Extract, Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract, Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Flower/Leaf Extract, Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Extract, Epilobium Angustifolium Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Amino Esters-1, Menthol.

How to use:

You can use it morning and night by applying it to a pre-moistened, dry face by gently massaging it onto the skin in a circular motion. The cushion effect of the lavish formula allows the fingers to glide across the skin without any pulling or tugging. Lightly splash some water over the face to emulsify the oil, creating a milky texture as you continue to massage the face. Rinse clean with water. In the evening I like to go over this a second time to make sure all of my makeup is removed.

The formula of the Boscia Makeup-Breakup Cool Cleansing Oil is indeed gentle and effective in making my skin feel clean and nourished but I find the menthol ingredient a bit worrisome to use on my sensitive eye area. For that reason I won’t crown this cleansing oil as my new favourite, but I really do enjoy using this a lot. My complexion feels brighter, smoother and purified and I don’t even have to worry about harmful ingredients. Unfortunately Boscia is hard to get ahold of since Sephora still won’t ship to Belgium. Therefore it is unlikely I’ll be able to repurchase this and I will be forced to try out others anyway. If you do plan a trip to the US, this is a nice product to bring back.

Yeah, not the biggest fan of menthol either so I’ll pass.
