H&M Fashion Against Aids Unisex Collection

H&M and Designers Against Aids are back with a new Fashion Against AIDS (FAA) collection. This is already the fourth time these two work together to promote safe sex and raise HIV/AIDS awareness through the messages found in the collection and through the advocacy of the organisations which benefit from the sales. This year’s edition is a unisex collection to point out that the HIV/AIDS message is as important for young women as for young men.

“We wanted to create a unisex collection with a sporty vibe. It felt really liberating to think of the cut, the shape and the fabric first before thinking of what gender it should be for. Key pieces are the slogan T-shirts as well as the sports style jacket with zip details, which can be worn in all sorts of ways. FAA is vital because it is so crucial to make young people aware of HIV and AIDS,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, Head of Design at H&M.

“H&M’s FAA campaigns are extremely important, as it is essential to spread the message to young people worldwide to take care and have safe sex. The main message is: life is beautiful, so keep it that way and be safe, both for yourself and your partner. HIV is everywhere, not just in Africa, not just in the gay community – HIV concerns us all. If you’re old enough and wise enough to make love, you’re also old and wise enough to take care,” says Ninette Murk, founder and creative director, DAA.

The collection is available in H&M’s Divided department from 26th April and 25% of sales will be donated to youth HIV/AIDS projects around the world.

Even though I appreciate and admire their efforts to raise awareness on the matter, I still think this collection is disappointing if you compare it to previous ones. I only like the white trenchcoat, the white sleeveless leather jacket and the dog backpack (which is a total rip off from the ‘Fruits Basket’ anime merchandise btw). I think that if you really want to raise awareness about something you need to create a collection that stands out from the crowd. The writings are well thought-through, but the graphics are just way to simple. Nah, I’m gonna let this one pass and focus on the Conscious Collection instead..

Just buy the condoms- most important piece in this collection- and hopefully in many FAA collections to come! If there’s one retailer that can make buying condoms trendy, it’s H&M. And so far condoms are the only ‘cure’ against HIV. Well, that and not having sex.

Leuke collectie, maar ik vond de vorige wel leuker eerlijk gezegd.

Ik vind enkele stuks wel leuk, maar ik ga zeker blijer worden van de Conscious Collection 🙂
